Wednesday, January 8, 2025 | Mark 6:45-52

After the five thousand had eaten and were satisfied,Jesus made his disciples get into the boatand precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida,while he dismissed the crowd. And when he had taken leave of them,he went off to the mountain to pray. When it was evening,the boat was far out on the sea and he was alone on shore. Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing,for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night,he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them.  But when they saw him walking on the sea,they thought it was a ghost and cried out. They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them,“Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were completely astounded. They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.

Tuesday, January 7, 2025 | Mark 6:34-44

When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them,for they were like sheep without a shepherd;and he began to teach them many things.By now it was already late and his disciples approached him and said,"This is a deserted place and it is already very late.Dismiss them so that they can goto the surrounding farms and villagesand buy themselves something to eat."He said to them in reply,"Give them some food yourselves."But they said to him,"Are we to buy two hundred days' wages worth of foodand give it to them to eat?"He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?  Go and see."And when they had found out they said,"Five loaves and two fish."So he gave orders to have them sit down in groups on the green grass.The people took their places in rows by hundreds and by fifties.Then, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciplesto set before the people;he also divided the two fish among them all.They all ate and were satisfied.And they picked up twelve wicker baskets full of fragmentsand what was left of the fish.Those who ate of the loaves were five thousand men.

Monday, January 6, 2025 | Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested,he withdrew to Galilee.He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,that what had been said through Isaiah the prophetmight be fulfilled:Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,Galilee of the Gentiles,the people who sit in darknesshave seen a great light,on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by deathlight has arisen.From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,"Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand."He went around all of Galilee,teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,and curing every disease and illness among the people.His fame spread to all of Syria,and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseasesand racked with pain,those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics,and he cured them.And great crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, and Judea,and from beyond the Jordan followed him.

Sunday, January 5, 2025 | Matthew 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?We saw his star at its risingand have come to do him homage.”When King Herod heard this,he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet:And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;since from you shall come a ruler,who is to shepherd my people Israel.”Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance.He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child.When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.”After their audience with the king they set out.And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the housethey saw the child with Mary his mother.They prostrated themselves and did him homage.Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

Saturday, January 4, 2025 | John 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples,and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,“Behold, the Lamb of God.”The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,“What are you looking for?”They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher),“where are you staying?”He said to them, “Come, and you will see.”So they went and saw where he was staying,and they stayed with him that day.It was about four in the afternoon.Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.He first found his own brother Simon and told him,“We have found the Messiah,” which is translated Christ.Then he brought him to Jesus.Jesus looked at him and said,“You are Simon the son of John;you will be called Cephas,” which is translated Peter. 

Friday, January 3, 2025 | John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.He is the one of whom I said,'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of mebecause he existed before me.'I did not know him,but the reason why I came baptizing with waterwas that he might be made known to Israel."John testified further, saying,"I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the skyand remain upon him.I did not know him,but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God."

Thursday, January 2, 2025 | John 1:19-28

This is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to himto ask him, “Who are you?”he admitted and did not deny it, but admitted,“I am not the Christ.” So they asked him,“What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?”He answered, “No.” So they said to him,“Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?”He said:“I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’as Isaiah the prophet said.” Some Pharisees were also sent. They asked him,“Why then do you baptizeif you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” John answered them,“I baptize with water;but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,the one who is coming after me,whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,where John was baptizing.

Wednesday, January 1, 2025 | Luke 2:16-21

The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,  and the infant lying in the manger.When they saw this,  they made known the message  that had been told them about this child.All who heard it were amazed  by what had been told them by the shepherds.And Mary kept all these things,  reflecting on them in her heart.Then the shepherds returned,  glorifying and praising God  for all they had heard and seen,  just as it had been told to them.  When eight days were completed for his circumcision,  he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel  before he was conceived in the womb.

Tuesday, December 31, 2024 | John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word,    and the Word was with God,    and the Word was God.He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him,    and without him nothing came to be.What came to be through him was life,    and this life was the light of the human race;    the light shines in the darkness,    and the darkness has not overcome it.
A man named John was sent from God.He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.He was not the light,but came to testify to the light.The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world,    and the world came to be through him,    but the world did not know him.He came to what was his own,    but his own people did not accept him.
But to those who did accept him    he gave power to become children of God,     to those who believe in his name,     who were born not by natural generation     nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision     but of God.
And the Word became flesh    and made his dwelling among us,    and we saw his glory,    the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son,    full of grace and truth.
John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’”From his fullness we have all received,grace in place of grace,because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.No one has ever seen God.The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

Monday, December 30, 2024 | Luke 2:36-40

There was a prophetess, Anna,the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.She was advanced in years,having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.She never left the temple,but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.And coming forward at that very time,she gave thanks to God and spoke about the childto all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.When they had fulfilled all the prescriptionsof the law of the Lord,they returned to Galilee,to their own town of Nazareth.The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;and the favor of God was upon him.
