Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders in parables."A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it,dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey. At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenantsto obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him,and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent them another servant. And that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully. He sent yet another whom they killed. So, too, many others; some they beat, others they killed. He had one other to send, a beloved son.He sent him to them last of all, thinking, 'They will respect my son.'But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir.Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'So they seized him and killed him,and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do?He will come, put the tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others.Have you not read this Scripture passage:The stone that the builders rejectedhas become the cornerstone;by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?"They were seeking to arrest him, but they feared the crowd, for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them.So they left him and went away.

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,so that everyone who believes in him might not perishbut might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Jesus and his disciples returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the eldersapproached him and said to him,“By what authority are you doing these things?Or who gave you this authority to do them?”Jesus said to them, “I shall ask you one question.Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.”They discussed this among themselves and said,“If we say, ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say,‘Then why did you not believe him?’But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?”– they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.”Then Jesus said to them,“Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area.He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve. The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry.Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf,he went over to see if he could find anything on it.When he reached it he found nothing but leaves;it was not the time for figs. And he said to it in reply, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again!”And his disciples heard it.They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple areahe began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changersand the seats of those who were selling doves. He did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area. Then he taught them saying, “Is it not written:My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples? But you have made it a den of thieves.”The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of itand were seeking a way to put him to death, yet they feared himbecause the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching. When evening came, they went out of the city.Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots.Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.”Jesus said to them in reply, “Have faith in God.Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain,‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’and does not doubt in his heartbut believes that what he says will happen,it shall be done for him. Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours. When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance,so that your heavenly Father may in turnforgive you your transgressions.”

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,he began to cry out and say,“Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.”Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”So they called the blind man, saying to him,“Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.”He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?”The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.”Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.”Immediately he received his sightand followed him on the way.

The disciples were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell themwhat was going to happen to him."Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Manwill be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to deathand hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise."Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him,"Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."He replied, "What do you wish me to do for you?"They answered him,"Grant that in your glorywe may sit one at your right and the other at your left."Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the chalice that I drinkor be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"They said to him, "We can."Jesus said to them, "The chalice that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to givebut is for those for whom it has been prepared."When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John.Jesus summoned them and said to them,"You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentileslord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you.Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serveand to give his life as a ransom for many."

Peter began to say to Jesus,"We have given up everything and followed you."Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sistersor mother or father or children or landsfor my sake and for the sake of the Gospelwho will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:houses and brothers and sistersand mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first."

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother            and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,            and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved,            he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”Then he said to the disciple,            “Behold, your mother.”And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, aware that everything was now finished,            in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled,            Jesus said, “I thirst.”There was a vessel filled with common wine.So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop            and put it up to his mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said,            “It is finished.”And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit. Now since it was preparation day,            in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath,            for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,            the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken            and they be taken down.So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first            and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,            they did not break his legs,            but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,            and immediately Blood and water flowed out.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews,Jesus came and stood in their midstand said to them, "Peace be with you."When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.As the Father has sent me, so I send you."And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,"Receive the Holy Spirit.Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supperand had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?"When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"Jesus said to him, "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me."So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?"It is this disciple who testifies to these thingsand has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Jesus did,but if these were to be described individually,I do not think the whole world would contain the booksthat would be written.
